FBH statement on behalf of the family of Mr Dan Brandon

Federation of British Herpetologists statement on behalf of the family of Mr Dan Brandon

Our thoughts at this time are with the family and friends of Mr Dan Brandon.

The exact circumstances surrounding Mr Brandon’s death are still uncertain at this time and we await further information from the police and ultimately the coroner. It does not appear that Dan was bitten by the snake as his only injury was a small cut on his head that had been sustained in the days prior to his death. That is very significant in my view.

We have offered appropriate support to the family who have asked us to continue to look after the African rock python in a manner in which Dan would have approved. In accordance with their wishes, it will not be euthanised.

We will take all steps necessary to ensure the animal's wellbeing and future welfare is secure and will support the people involved in looking after it. We will not be commenting further on the location or the arrangements in place to care for the animal as the family are concerned that the animal is not exploited.

The family have also requested that their privacy be respected at this sad time.
